Garden and kitchen news

Hi everyone,

I'm still here ;)  We had some busy times. Things are slowing down a bit now.
I'm spending time in the garden and in the kitchen.
This morning, this little jackdaw came to see what we were doing. So cute.

Neighbours gave us rhubarb and this is what I made with it.
An Amish rhubarb crumble.
I found the recipe on Amish 365:

http://www.amish365.com/rhubarb-crunch/

It is simply delicious. Our daughter isn't very fond of rhubarb,
but she asked for more crumble.

The book I'm reading at the moment is: Planted with Hope.
Part two of the Pinecraft Pie Shop series by Tricia Goyer and Sherry Gore.
I love it very much and can't wait to read part three:
Sewn with Joy.
The recipes are great too.

Meanwhile in the garden:

My rambler rose Veilchenblau is flowering.
I had to cut it down by half last year.
The rose arbor I had before, broke during a storm.
On my birthday I got money for a new rose arbor.
We bought a wooden one. The last one was iron, but not that strong.
The rose has grown so much. It is bigger than last year.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Slow Clothing

Nanna Chel who writes at Going Grey and Slightly Green wrote a blog about slow clothing. I find this very interesting. This is the blog:

http://goinggreyandslightlygreen.blogspot.nl/2018/03/workshop-on-finding-meaning-in-what-we.html

I found another article about this subject:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-26/slow-clothing-project-40-garments-in-40-weeks/7101564

I love this idea. It isn't new though. During the crisis in the 1930's and during and after WW2 a lot of women re-used clothes and even used parachutes, that were left behind, to make clothing.
Maybe this idea has found fertile ground again in the crisis and is also applied by people who want to live sustainable. I hope we will see more of this.

Werk genoeg dus.

Hello again

Hi everyone,

wow, it has been a long time since my last post.
A lot has happened. Our daughter graduated and it going to university. She is staying at home, because university is closeby.

We have been busy helping our daughter with her paper rounds and keeping our dog happy.
Leila has grown a lot and is such a sweet, happy dog.

It is starting to get cooler, so I have been in the kitchen, baking.
Today we have our repair club and I have baked two cakes.
A normal cake and a chocolate yoghurt cake with pieces of chocolate.

We received a bag of tomatoes and I am thinking about what to do with them.
They are nice and big.
I will have to see what I am going to make. Soup, sauce, or something completely different.

I hope you're all doing ok and are having a wonderful end of Summer.

Happy Easter

Hi everyone,

a very Happy Easter to everyone.

Yesterday I baked my first ever carrot cake, to serve with coffee for Easter.
The recipe came from a cousin, who made the cake a few years ago and we all loved it.
I had the recipe, but never tried it, until yesterday.

It tastes as good as it looks fortunately.
It was quite some work, but it really paid off.
The family loves it.
I think I will have to make it again ;)

Have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Pictures galore

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is OK ?
Here in The Netherlands Spring has arrived.
I have been working in the garden and it has been wonderful weather.

Leila has grown a lot.
Here she is on an outing with us. She met one of her sisters again and they had a great time.

In the garden there are some flowers and bushes in bloom. It looks great. Spring has finally arrived.
Here's a  Lunaria annua ( we call it Judas coin in Dutch). There are some of them in the garden. They seed themselves.

This is a Loropetalum chinense Fire Dance ( we call it Witches' bush in Dutch). The flowers are such a bright pink.

This is a little cherry tree in bloom. It is a May cherry.
I hope we will have fruit this year.

A sweet smelling Viburnum Carlesii Juddii. The smell is so wonderful.
I love the pretty pink and white flowers.

The peony is growing very fast. It is a light pink one. I can't wait for it to flower again !

This is a sweetpea bush, lathyrus. It flowers each year.
It isn't scented, but the flowers are very pretty.

A wallflower in a very beautiful colour.

We went to the repair club today, which means I made some cake and slices.
This is a fruit cake and a rolled oats and raisins slice with chocolate.
The men really loved it.

Here's Leila, minding my crochet work. She loves to sit with me while I'm working.

I hope you all have a wonderful week !
